Colour Vision Defect

This is a condition where the eye has the inability to distinguish colours, it can occur in various forms. The most common form is the inability to distinguish between red and green, however less commonly between yellows and blues. It’s a common condition in with 8% of the male population and 0.5% of the female population. The condition is not treatable due to its genetic factors, in very rare conditions is can be acquired due to medical conditions.

Hyperopia (Farsightedness)

This is a condition where far away objects appear clearer than near objects. This condition is treatable by wearing convex lenses.

Astigmatism

A condition where the cornea or the lens of the eye is not perfectly spherical. Whereby the front section of the eye has irregular curves and the image appears distorted. This condition is treated with spectacles that correct this irregular pattern of the eye.

Presbyopia (Age Related Eye Condition)

Presbyopia is a condition where the eye losses it focusing ability gradually for near objects. It is a natural aging process of the eye, the cause being loss of elasticity of the lens within the eye. It effects most people over the age of 40, it is treatable with reading glasses.

Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is a common condition which is the infection or swelling of the outer membrane of the eye. The infection could be attributed to many causes including; allergic reactions, bacteria, virus or fungal infections. It’s normally treated to overcome the cause. Such as antibiotic, antiviral or allergic eye drops (e.g. Topical steroids)

Cataract

This is a condition where the lens inside the eye becomes cloudy, and which blocks light from entering the retina. Hence causing cloudy/blurred vision. This can be caused due to varying conditions primarily aging, diabetes, high blood pressure and some medications. The condition is easily treated in advanced cases by surgical removal of the lens, with the replacement of an artificial lens. This is the most common surgical procedure performed on the eye. 

Floaters

Floaters are tiny specs or stringy objects that float into your field of vision. These are debris like objects inside the fluid of your eye. When they obstruct the line of vision that cast a shadow and appear in your field of view. There are many causes of this condition, primarily it’s an aging process of the eye, but in certain causes such as retinal detachment, vitreous detachment or inflammation of the back of the eye can cause them.

Dry Eyes

Dry eyes occur when the eye doesn’t produce enough tears, moisture is important to maintain the health of the eye a common symptom of dry eyes are stinging, burning or discomfort. There are many causes of dry eyes, predominantly; old age, deficiency in vitamin A and various autoimmune medical conditions. The treatment is normally to lubricate the eye with lubricant eye drops.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a condition where the optic nerve is damaged as well as the erosion of the optic nerve tissue, the damage can cause a loss of the visual field and lead to blindness in advanced cases. This can happen due to various causes, predominantly high pressure inside the eye. This condition is preventable if diagnosed early and treated with eye drops and sometimes surgery.

Diabetic Retinopathy

This condition is caused due to damage to the blood vessels in the retina. Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetics are both prone the diabetic retinopathy, the damage to the blood vessels in the retina can cause bleeding and swelling in untreated cases. It’s the most common cause of blindness in Australia. It is imperative for all diabetics to have their retina screened annually, to prevent the outcome of this disease.

Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration is a condition where the macular (center part of the retina) is damaged, this leads to a loss of central vision, as well as a loss of sight to fine detail. Normally the condition is age related, there are two types; Wet and Dry Type. Wet type is the more aggressive of the two. There are various ways to treat this, including injections and laser.
