Children's Vision

Childrens Short-sightedness (Myopia) Myopia has become a major problem in children's eye health today. Current studies indicate that 30% of children are myopic in Australia and if the trends continue at this rate by 2050, 50% of adolescence will be myopic. In Singapore currently 90% of adolences are myopic, this sounds alarming, but it’s a fact! Although you cant stop a child from becoming myopic there are treatmentsthat can be taken to reduce the progression.

Such as

  • Topical medication Low Dose Atropine
  • Dual focus spectacles
  • Increased time outside

At Nazarian Optometrists, for rapidly progressing short-sighted children, we recommend and prescribe low dose Atropine eyedrops as a primary course of treatment.

Although this not a cure for myopia (short-sighted) it has been shown to reduce the rate of progression. Parents should be aware that myopia cannot be cured and there are a lot of myths around. But do not be fooled, you must seek professional advice backed by proven scientific methods.

In conjunction with atropine, we also recommend the prescription of Dual Focal lenses which lessens eye strain when focussing on closer objects such as books or iPads. At our practice we advise all parents to reduce their children’s use of electronic devices and encourage their children to spend time outdoors which has also been proven to reduce the progression of myopia.
